Awesome Artist, Awesome Cause

You know what would be awesome? If you were named 2010 Official State Musician of Texas. And if you had an album of your original songs performed by the likes of Willie Nelson, Robert Earl Keen and Brave Combo. And if some of those performers — including Keen, Ruthie Foster and Patrice Pike — got together to perform a fundraiser concert, say tonight at 8 (doors at 7) at the Paramount Theatre.

If that happened to you, you would be Sara Hickman, who is awesome. The show is both a CD release and fundraiser for Theatre Action Project, an Austin nonprofit that produces arts programs for young people. In a news release, Hickman said she was drawn to the project “to promote families being creative together. Many times this starts with children bringing home ideas they learn at school. That’s why I created this compilation CD, to raise funds for Theatre Action Project and help them take the arts and theatre back into the schools.”

The album, incidentally, is called “Best of Times,” and the White Ghost Shivers plan an after-party. All the proceeds from the show go to the program. The show is officially billed as “Sara Hickman and Friends,” and she sure has a lot of them. Because it’s not a benefit concert in Austin unless Sara Hickman, who is awesome, is there.

Tickets are $30-$155. To purchase, visit http://www.austintheatre.org or call 474-1221.
